A migraine that sends a kid home from school at noon, again, is what this research follows: how often the headaches come, what sets them off, and what they cost in classes, sleep and sports. A parent keeps the headache diary and is part of every visit.

Parents of a child with migraines know the pattern: the dark room, the missed practice, the make-up test. Teams in this area follow how often headaches come, how long they last, what tends to come before them, such as skipped meals, screens or short sleep, and how that pattern changes over months.

Taking part usually means a headache diary a parent helps keep, visits planned around the school day, and conversations where the young person describes the headache in their own words. Parent or guardian permission is required for anyone under 18, and a parent or guardian is part of every decision.

Research with children and teens is reviewed by an independent board that looks at how a program asks a young person for agreement before it may start. Parents and guardians can register interest here, and the clinical team will explain what a program would look like for the family.

Frequently asked questions

What goes in a headache diary?

When a headache started, how long it lasted, what the day looked like before it, and whether school or sports were missed. A parent helps, and it takes a minute a day.

Will visits mean missing more school?

The clinical team plans visits around the school calendar and offers early or after-school times. The schedule is shared before a family decides.

Does my child have to stop their current headache medicine?

Programs differ, and the clinical team goes over how a program fits with a child's current care with the family before anything begins.

What are teams trying to learn about migraine in young people?

How often migraines come across a school year, what sets them off, and how much they cost in sleep, classes and activities. That pattern is what the diary builds.

Who is in the room at a visit?

The young person, a parent or guardian and the clinical team. Parent or guardian permission is required for anyone under 18, and the child describes the headache themselves.

Is there compensation for taking part?

Compensation may be available for your time and inconvenience.
